Robert S. Sombathy.  When selecting a criminal defense attorney to defend the liberties of a client, there is no substitute for trial experience.  Robert is a Board Certified Criminal Trial Lawyer.  Over the past 15 years he has represented thousands of clients accused of criminal offenses.  He has been lead counsel on over 80 felony jury trials representing defendant’s who have been charged with misdemeanors, felonies, capital cases and federal cases such as:
  • DUI, Domestic Violence, Assault, Battery, Possession of Drugs, Murder
  • Manslaughter, Child Abuse, Aggravated Battery, Grand Theft
  • Drug Trafficking, Sex Crimes, Burglary, Firearm cases, Juvenile cases
  • Conspiracy, RICO cases, White Collar Crimes, Violations of Probation
  • and other various crimes

Robert has also successfully argued legal defenses such as self defense, alibi, lack of knowledge, legal insanity and many more ….

The vast majority of attorney’s are not Board Certified.  Board Certification is the highest recognition awarded by the Florida Bar for competency and experience within an area of the law.  There are only 350 Board Certified Criminal Trial Lawyers in the entire State of Florida.  Robert has successfully maintained Board Certification status since 1999.

Robert received his Juris Doctor degree from the Cumberland School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Spring Hill College.  Robert was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1993.

Pre-trial motions can be an important part of a client’s defense.  Robert has had over 15 years experience in drafting and arguing motions for suppression of illegally seized evidence, motions to exclude prejudicial evidence, motions for bond reductions, motions to dismiss unlawful charges, and experience in litigating violation of probation hearings.

Robert is admitted to practice law in both the State of Florida and in Federal Court for the Northern District of Florida.  He is also a member of Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Local Bench Bar Committee and the Local Bar Grievance Committee.

NATIONALLY TELEVISED BOOT CAMP TRIAL

With over 80 felony jury trials to his credit, Robert has also gained national attention for his representation of one of the boot camp drill instructors in a nationally televised manslaughter trial.  From October 3, 2007 through October 12, 2007 much of the country was tuned in to Court TV and other news agencies such as The News Herald and USA Today, as the fate of 8 drill instructors and one nurse hung in the balance.  The State attempted to show the death of a 14 year old boy was due to the physical encounter with drill instructors exhibited in a widely seen videotape.

The defense countered by demonstrating that the young man suffered from a rare, but potentially fatal blood disorder that triggered his death.  Robert was one of the lead attorneys in this high profile case which culminated with not guilty verdicts for all defendants.  You can view Robert’s opening and closing statements for yourself by simply clicking on the video icon on this page.
